From 15th-25th May, 1915, while the Battle of Festubert was being fought, the 1st Royal West Surrey (Queens) battalion of 3 Brigade, 1st Division were in Corps reserve east of Bethune and Locon and suffered some casualties when parties were sent forward to clear the battlefield where there was still a considerable amount of shell fire top contend with. One of these casualties was Walter Challis who was killed on 19th May. |
